At nineteen, that meant joining the Army. It led me across the world, where I discovered places, people, and cultures that changed the way I looked at life. Some of my favorite memories came from standing on the side of a cliff after a day of climbing, watching the sun disappear over the Mediterranean in Spain. Others came from sleeping in a tent under pine trees, working as a wildland firefighter, or sharing slow evenings with friends who always made me feel at home. Along the way, I realized something. Years later, I couldn't always remember the exact conversations or dates.
